Nigerians on Twitter have continued to lambast the Chairman of the Nigerians In Diaspora Commission, (NiDCOM) Abike Dabiri-Erewa over her stereotypical comment on Nigerians residing in Indonesia.
On Monday, it was earlier reported that Dabiri-Erewa came under the spotlight over a Twitter reply where she called a Twitter user, “Ode”, a loose Yoruba word for an idiot.
SaharaReporters had also reported that Dabiri-Erewa assured Nigerian students in India of their safety, claiming that the Indian authorities had signed a written commitment to protect them.
Dabiri-Erewa stated this on Monday in a series of tweets while reacting to a report about how Nigerian students were attacked by their Indian Colleagues during a clash at the Gurgaon University near Delhi.
While commenting on her post, a Twitter user identified as @sensegiver1 said, “She should go to Indonesia and see how Nigerians are treated. Mumu (slang for foolish) woman supporting a failed government. She’s equally part of the failure. Eye service!”
Responding to this comment, the Diaspora Commission boss said, “Ode (an Idiot in Yoruba language)! You go to Indonesia, carry drugs, do cultism, and come begging to be rescued from death sentence. Thank God for NDLEA (National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency) now saving people like you from death row.”
The response from her has generated several criticisms on Twitter.
A broadcaster, Fola Folayan, said Dabiri’s response contradicted her statutory duties as Diaspora Commission Chairperson.
“The one person whose job it is to protect Nigerians in the diaspora & facilitate relationships with the international community just stereotyped the community of Nigerians living in Indonesia because she was personally insulted.
“A Stereotype she should be working hard to dispel,” Fola wrote on her Twitter.
Another user @chaplinez70 said, “Nobody cares about her exchanging insults, I certainly don't. She stereotyped Nigerians in Indonesia as drug pushers and then have been retweeting several ethnic slurs made in her defence.
“You think anyone cares you called him Ode? You just called all Nigerians in Indonesia drug peddlers and cultists. Seems you don’t know the gravity of your tweet. Always keep your emotions in check, Madam diplomat,” @sensegiver1 added.
A user, @Nkemchor said he could not understand why Dabiri who is a strong supporter of the drug-linked ruling All Progressive Congress Presidential candidate (APC), Bola Tinubu, would have a justification to profile Nigerian nationals in Indonesia as drug addicts.
He wrote, “Abike Dabiri insulted and profiled Nigerians in Indonesia saying they do drugs and cultism and ask for help when caught. Meanwhile, she supports Bola Tinubu who was indicted for drug offences in the US. I am highly disgusted. It seems there is no sane person in APC.”
Another user, @abikedabiri also wrote: “Abike you should be very ashamed of yourself. Just because I told you to stop doing yeye eye service and concentrate on rescuing many innocent Nigerians locked up abroad especially in Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia, you turned around to say I went to do cultism.”
“Dear Distinguished, madam went overboard with her general stereotyping of Nigerians in Indonesia. As a diplomat, she'd have learnt that not all words are spoken. This tantrum is unnecessary even when a senior diplomat has advised. We're Nigerians before any political affiliation,” a user,  @Johnnylakeside added.
