Human rights activists on Thursday in Abuja converged on the Unity Fountain to honour the victims of the 2020 #EndSARS protest and mark the second memorial of the Lekki Massacre in Lagos State.

The activists also demanded for the release of all protesters who are currently languishing in detention across the country.

The Abuja Coordinator of Take It Back Movement, Benjamin Manasseh, described the massacre of innocent Nigerians by the security agents at Lekki Toll Gate in October 10th 2022 as a crime against humanity.

He called on Nigerians to carry out the long awaited revolution through their ballots in 2023 by voting out bad leaders.

He said, “We are here today to remember our fallen heroes at Lekki and all over the country who were massacred because they came out to demand for good governance. They were killed with national flags in their hands while chanting the national anthem at Lekki Toll Gate.”

He called on the Nigerian government to release those Nigerian youths who took part in the protest who are still being held by the security agents.

He lamented over the increased rate of police brutality which sparked the #EndSARS protest across the country in October 2020.

On her own part, the Chief Executive Officer, Miss Amnesty Nigeria, Tracy Mcwary, called on the Nigerian government to ensure that the recommendations of the Investigative panel of Inquiry across the country were implemented and all victims were adequately compensated.

She also demanded for immediate dismissal of police officers who were found culpable by the panels.

According to her, “Some youths were arrested during #EndSARS protest; I want them to be released. I am calling on the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, to order for the release of those youths who were arrested at Lekki Toll Gate and various locations in the country.”

She also called for an improved welfare and working conditions for the rank and file of Nigerian police adding that policemen would not stay on the road extorting motorists if they were comfortable with their salaries.

She therefore called on the police authorities to ensure upward review of the allowances and entitlements of the officers in the interest of justice.

The placards carrying protesters defied the presence of heavy policemen who were drafted to the fountain to prevent Nigerians from carrying out the protest.
