How Nigerian Police Illegally Detained Musician, Friend Arrested During #EndSARS Protest, Framed Them As Armed Robbers
October 20, 2022

Dare was arrested in December 2020 by Nigerian policemen attached to Sabo Police Station, Lagos State Command.

Operatives of the Nigerian Police Force have wrongfully detained and charged a musician, Dare Williams, and his friend who were among the youths arrested during the #EndSARS protests, with armed robbery.

A Twitter user, @truthfully83, narrated how the incident unfolded.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that a global human rights advocacy group, Amnesty International, lamented that over 40 protesters are still in prisons across Nigeria two years after the #EndSARS protest.

In October 2020, many Nigerian youths stormed the streets in some states of the federation to protest against police brutality and call for the disbandment of a police unit notorious for extrajudicial killings and human rights violations, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

In a series of tweets, the netizen said Dare was arrested in December 2020 by Nigerian policemen attached to Sabo Police Station, Lagos State Command.

His tweet reads partly: "His ordeal started during the 2020 #EndSARS protest, which he actively participated in, posting random videos of proceedings on his WhatsApp channel as gotten, on a daily basis, to the admiration of his followers.”

He posted lots of videos both on WhatsApp and twitter.

"After the Lekki massacre and the destruction that ensued, the Lagos state police command, the Army, and DSS went on a rampage. Secretly abducting and arresting young men all around Lagos – conducting massive raids throughout October, November and December randomly.

"In one of such random arrests, Dare became a victim on the 22nd of Dec 2020. He had just left Attan cemetery, where he went to pray on his mother's grave. A yearly ritual he performs on his birthday. He branched a Shawarma spot around 11am to buy some, when the police arrived.

"Men from Sabo Police station came, and were raiding youths randomly around Unilag Road, When some accosted Dare where he was buying shawarma. They grabbed him on his trouser, without giving him any chance to identify himself, or explain. They forced him into their vehicle."

He further added that the police forcefully seized his phone and discovered Dare was among those who trended a viral video of a mob that attacked a policemen few days after #Lekkki Massacre occurred.

"They seized his phone, and started searching. They saw his WhatsApp channel, and lots of videos he has posted as a vlogger. They saw how he received random videos, how he downloaded random videos as well. They searched through his videos, until they found one.

"It is a random video of a police officer that was killed by a mob, during the violence that ensued after the Lekki massacre of #EndSARS protesters. The video went viral, & was shared on so many social media platforms. Same way Dare shared it on WhatsApp channel & twitter handle," the tweet added.

Due to this, the police alleged Dare to be among those who partook and fuelled the lynching of the police officer who died in the viral video seen on his phone.

The tweet continued: "The police took Dare Williams to their station at Sabo, accused him of being an #EndSARS protester. They threatened him, that he will meet his end in their custody. That he must produce everyone on that video. That he is among those that mobbed and killed the police officer.

'He tried explaining himself to the police, but his explanation all fell on deaf ears, as he was subjected to torture and heavy beatings. They beat him with all sorts of items at their disposal including the butts of their guns, horsewhips, woods and rods.

"While he was being tortured, his best friend and course mate, at the Federal College of Education Akoka, Bethel Chukwuocha, kept calling him. He called several times because it was unusual for Dare to see his call without answering. They were both in the studio the previous night.

"So the police asked him who the caller was? He was told them it was Bethel, his best friend and course mate. They immediately went to arrest Bethel on the instruction of DPO, Sabo police station. That his friend Bethel, is also an #EndSARS protester. He must suffer as well.

"The police sent their men to Abule Oja, very close to Unilag, to arrest Bethel in his house. Handcuffed him like a criminal & brought him to the station at Sabo. Without knowing what his offence or crime was, he was subjected to intense torture & beatings at the station

"At this point, nobody from Dare's family or Bethels family knew where they are, or what was going on with them. The police kept them incommunicado, while they took turns to torture them. These are young men who we're at the music studio the previous night, chasing their dreams."
