It was learnt that the assailants killed the police identified as Sgt. Peter Ikwen and took his rifle.

The Nigeria Police Force, Cross River State Command has confirmed the death of a police sergeant, who was killed by unknown gunmen at Edgerton Street, Calabar, the state capital.
It was learnt that the assailants killed the police identified as Sgt. Peter Ikwen and took his rifle.
This was contained in statement signed by the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Irene Ugbo, describing the incident as condemnable.
“I have just gathered that a police sergeant was shot dead by unknown gunmen in the early hours of today (Saturday) and his rifle was taken away by the assailants.
“From the information I have, the incident took place at about 8am today, he just stepped out from the Obong’s palace where he was posted on duty, but he was attached to Atakpa Division; he wanted to ease himself before he was shot and killed.
“It was on his way that his assailants accosted him close to the dustbin near the palace of the Obong and shot him.
“They also carted away his rifle in the process; we sympathise with the family of the deceased, but we won’t relent in getting those that did this, we will haunt them down, the long arm of the law will surely catch up with them.
"The investigation has begun with a view to unravelling those behind the act," the police said.
