BREAKING: South-East Nigeria Governors Meet Behind Closed-Doors In Enugu

Breaking

The meeting may be connected to the recent kidnapping incidents in the region and a terror alert issued by the United States and some other foreign countries, particularly concerning Abuja, Nigeria's capital.

The South-East Governors Forum is currently holding an emergency meeting at the Government House in Enugu.

The meeting may be connected to the recent kidnapping incidents in the region and a terror alert issued by the United States and some other foreign countries, particularly concerning Abuja, Nigeria's capital.

SaharaReporters had reported that some gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen on October 13 attacked the Obeagu community in the Ishielu local government area of Ebonyi State, killing one person, injuring two and abducting three. They were released in Benue State after a huge ransom was paid.

It was learnt that the assailants told their victims that they would strike again.

Last Sunday, many passengers including students of the University of Nigeria Nsukka were attacked and kidnapped near a checkpoint along Ugwuogo-Nike-Opi-Nsukka Road.

The kidnappers demanded a ransom of N300 million for their release. In Eha-Amufu, several communities that share boundaries with Benue State have been consistently attacked. At the last count, over 19 community farm settlements have been sacked with their houses burnt.

Unfortunately, security agencies have not arrested anyone for the attacks.

However, sources told SaharaReporters that the governors will likely discuss the incessant attacks and their implications for the 2023 general elections.

Among other issues, one of the sources said the governors will discuss the implication of the Federal High Court and Appeal Court judgements that discharged the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, the refusal of President Muhammadu Buhari's government to obey the orders and what it portends for the region going into the elections.

The meeting currently being held at Enugu State Lion building is attended by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, Ebonyi State Governor and Chairman of Southeast Governors’ Forum, David Umahi and the host, Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

The governors of Anambra and Imo states, Prof. Charles Soludo and Senator Hope Uzodinma respectively are represented by their deputies, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezi and Prof. Placid Njoku.
