There is apprehension in Ibagun, Okelele area of Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, due to recent clashes by rival cults that resulted in the death of at least three people in the community.

SaharaReporters gathered the clash started on Monday evening when a young man, identified as Abdulganiy, popularly known as Messi, was attacked by a gang of cultists and shot dead

Hence, to avenge Abdulganiyu’s death, some members of his cult group launched an attack against a rival group and killed two people identified as Adebayo Yitta and Lanre on Tuesday.

A member of the community who narrated how the duo were killed during the attack said they were hacked to death after being shot by the cultists.

However, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ajayi Okasanmi, did not immediately respond when SaharaReporters sought to get his reaction and comment on the issue.

Clashes by rival cults and gangs are not strange in Kwara State. For instance, SaharaReporters in July reported how a university student and two others were killed during a clash between two rival groups in the state.

It was learnt that the cult members engaged in gun battles in Akerbiata, Gambari and Ojagboro communities in the Ilorin East local government area, causing panic among the residents.

A 23-year-old Computer Science student of the National Open University of Nigeria in Ilorin, Mohammed Isiaka, was among those murdered by suspected cultists.

Also, Tobi, aka Treasure and one other person, were confirmed dead following the traditional celebration of August 8 (8/8) cult activities at Olunlade area in Ilorin.
