A Nigerian court has jailed a man, identified as Emmanuel Adeyi who posed as an American prostitute to scam people online.
Anti-corruption agency, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission made this known via a tweet on Friday, stating that Adeyi was convicted by Justice I. Mohammed of the FCT High Court Gwagwalada.
"The EFCC, Abuja Zonal Command, on Thursday, November 3, 2022 secured the conviction of one Emmanuel Adeyi before Justice I. Mohammed of the FCT High Court Gwagwalada-Abuja on an internet-related fraud charge," EFCC wrote.
The details of the sentence and the number of years involved could not be verified by SaharaReporters at the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, in October, the alarming rate of internet fraud in the financial services sector came under scrutiny, with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System expressing concern about the growing threat.
They wondered why, despite the Nigerian Government's mandatory NIN-SIM linkage, people who use mobile lines and bank accounts to defraud others could not be apprehended and prosecuted quickly.

Speaking at a webinar organised by the Committee of e-Banking Industry Heads, with the theme ‘Digital Fraud and the need for a national Intelligence programme’, the Director of Payments System at the CBN, Musa Jimoh, stated that the rate of fraud in the sector had expanded and that the perpetrators were exploiting new channels to compromise the system.
