Court Revokes Bail Granted Nigerian Businesswoman, Adanu Ajumi, Declares Her Wanted Over Alleged N47Million Fraud
November 4, 2022

In 2019, the anti-graft agency arraigned Ajumi on two counts bordering on obtaining money by false pretence.

Justice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos State, has revoked the bail of Nigerian businesswoman Adanu Blessing Ajumi, and declared her wanted over an alleged N47 million fraud.

SaharaReporters gathered that Ajumi, who was arraigned before the court on December 19, 2019, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), is being prosecuted for defrauding her victim, one Mrs Favour Nnamani, of N47 million under the name of Emerald Multipurpose Cooperative Society.

In 2019, the anti-graft agency arraigned Ajumi on two counts bordering on obtaining money by false pretence, contrary to Section 1(1) and 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006, and stealing, contrary to Section 278 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos 2011.

One of the counts against her reads, "Adanu Blessing Ajumi, between 30th day of November 2018 and the 11th day of January 2019 at Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, dishonestly stole and converted to your own use a cumulative sum of N47,575,000 (Forty-seven Million Five Hundred and Seventy-five Thousand Naira) from Mrs. Favour Bukola Nnamani."

However, Ajumi pleaded "not guilty" to the charges when she was arraigned in 2019 but was granted bail.

But at the court sitting on Thursday, November 3, which was slated for the adoption of final written addresses, the prosecuting counsel, S. O. Daji, informed the court of the defendant, Ajumi’s absence.

Daji reminded the court that it was not the first time Ajumi had been absent from court and that it was obvious she had jumped bail.

On his part, O. Ajanaku, counsel for the defendant, also expressed surprise at his client’s absence in court.

The prosecution counsel, Daji, therefore moved an application urging the court to "revoke the bail of the defendant and for an order to declare her wanted,” to which there was no objection from the defence counsel.

On this background, Justice Dada granted the request of the prosecution counsel and held that "the bail of the defendant is hereby revoked and a bench warrant is hereby ordered for her arrest against the next date.”

The Judge further ordered the EFCC “to declare her wanted."

Subsequently, Justice Dada adjourned the matter till December 2, 2022.
