Gunmen Attack Police Checkpoint In Anambra, Officers Feared Killed, Injured

The attack forced drivers and commuters to run for dear lives as the gunmen shoot indiscriminately to scare people away.

Some gunmen attacked a police checkpoint along Ihiala-Uli road in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State on Tuesday morning.

The attack, SaharaReporters gathered, happened around 10:30am. Some policemen were reported to have been killed during the attack while some sustained varies degrees of injury.

Locals reported that the attack forced drivers and commuters to run for dear lives as the gunmen shoot indiscriminately to scare people away.

Some eyewitnesses told journalists in Awka that security operatives in the area ran away abandoning their station and duty post. They also removed their uniforms and took cover in nearby bushes and houses.

Drivers were reported to have abandoned Onitsha- Owerri expressway as filling stations along the road abruptly closed down to avoid stray bullets incident.

SaharaReporters could not independently verify the claims as the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, could not take his calls or respond to text message on the incident.

But one of the senior police officers confirmed the attack.

The source said, “I’ve not heard of any death but I can tell you there were casualties during the gun battle.”
