An irate mob on Wednesday set two young men ablaze for allegedly attempting to rob Point of Sale (POS) operators in Enugu, the Enugu State capital.

SaharaReporters gathered that the incident took place at the Independence Layout area along the busy Independence Avenue, popularly known as Bissala Road.

It was gathered that the duo were caught trying to rob POS operators in the area and were apprehended by residents who decided to take the laws into their hands.

Before setting them on fire, the irate mob first stripped them naked, and make their videos, before setting them on fire.

It was further gathered that the angry mob did not allow the police to take them to their station as they overpowered them.

A viral video making the rounds on social media shows both robbers being burnt while a small crowd gathered to witness the horror scene.

The country director of the Global Society for Anti-Corruption, G-SAC, Mrs. Amaka Nweke has condemned the jungle justice.

Although she condemned the alleged attempted robbery by the victims, she, however, advised Nigerians to always exercise restraint when confronted with such cases.

Nweke said, "I condemn what the robbers do to the POS operators but at the same time, I condemn mob action. They should have handed them over to the police instead of taking laws into their hands."

However, a resident who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the robbers deserved what they got.

"I like the way they were set ablaze alive so that it will serve as a deterrent to others. If you have been a victim of these bad boys, you will even want a worse thing to happen to them. I have no pity for them. Let them burn in hell for all I care."

SaharaReporters gathered that there have been increasing robbery cases in the state capital.

One Mr Gerald Ede told SaharaReporters that robbers broke into his poultry farm and stole over 100 birds within the last three months.

Although he did not support jungle justice, he blamed it on security agencies and the judiciary which are believed to mess up the prosecution of criminals.

Efforts to get the reaction of the police were unsuccessful as the Command's spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe could not immediately be reached for comments.
