A human rights lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, has berated the action of the security agents particularly the operatives of Department of State Services (DSS) over the extortion of money from passengers coming into the country at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos State.
He described the action of the officers as ridiculous and embarrassing to the entire country.
Olajengbesi, an Abuja-based lawyer, disclosed this in a post on his Facebook page on Tuesday following an encounter at the arrival wing of the airport where some DSS operatives allegedly begged for money from those arriving in the country.
Olajengbesi described the trend as shocking just as he called on the Director-General of the service to live up to the expectations and act swiftly in redeeming the image of the agency in the interest of the country.
The post read, “It is actually an embarrassment to the entire nation to have DSS officers vetting people coming into the country at the Lagos airport begging for money. One can forgive immigration and custom officers because this is simply customary, but that a very important agency like the DSS is shocking.
“This is a wakeup call to the DG DSS. The entire world is moving on from petty irresponsibility, people are not being delayed for security questioning but with “abeg bless your boy.””
It would be recalled that the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Isah Idris had few weeks ago ordered the investigation of a case of extortion perpetrated by officers of the agency at the airport.
The order followed a recent outcry on Twitter by a Dubai-bound Nigerian, who alleged massive extortion of under-40 Nigerians travelling to the Gulf city.
Idris also ordered “the withdrawal” of the entire shift on duty at the time of the incident.
