Aviation workers' unions have rejected the concession plan of the Nigerian government for four international airports.

Employees under various unions in the aviation sector vowed to resist the moves by the government to concession the Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano international airports.

The Federal Ministry of Aviation had announced Corporacion America Airports Consortium as the preferred bidder for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, while ENL Consortium has also been selected as the reserve bidder for NAIA.

Also, the preferred bidder for Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, is TAV/NAHCO/PROJECT PLANET LIMITED (PPL) Consortium and Sifax/Changi Consortium has also been selected as the reserve bidder for MMIA.

The preferred bidder for Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), Kano, is Corporacion America Airports Consortium but there were no reserve bidders for MAKIA as of the time of the announcement.

Port Harcourt International Airport (PHIA), Port Harcourt, did not receive any proposals as of the close of the deadline and as such has not had preferred and reserve bidders attached to it.

Workers under Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP) have rejected the action of the government.

The workers during a joint congress on Thursday said the concession exercise was in bad faith.

Consequently, they threatened to shut down the entire sector if the government continued with the concession plan.

A total of 13 airport consortia comprising local and foreign companies had submitted bids to be prequalified for the planned concession of the Nigerian international airports.
