Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan Makes Top Five Finalists For 2022 Women’s World Athlete

The World Athletics announced this in a press statement on Monday, saying, “The five athletes, who represent five countries from three area associations, have achieved sensational performances across a range of athletics disciplines in 2022, at the World Athletics Championships Oregon22, World Athletics Indoor Championships Belgrade 22, one-day meeting circuits and other events around the world.”

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan has been named one of the five finalists for Women’s World Athlete of the Year as the countdown to the World Athletics Awards 2022 continues.

The World Athletics announced this in a press statement on Monday, saying, “The five athletes, who represent five countries from three area associations, have achieved sensational performances across a range of athletics disciplines in 2022, at the World Athletics Championships Oregon22, World Athletics Indoor Championships Belgrade 22, one-day meeting circuits and other events around the world.”

The federation said the list was compiled by an international panel of athletics experts, comprising representatives from all six continental areas.

The other four finalists joining Amusan are Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Kimberly Garcia, Sydney McLaughlin and Yulimar Rojas.

 

Amusan became the first Nigerian world champion after she stormed to a sensational 12.06 seconds in the final.

The 25-year-old also won a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games before retaining her Diamond League title.

“Tobi Amusan, NGR World 100m hurdles champion, Diamond League, Commonwealth and African 100m hurdles champion, Set a world 100m hurdles record of 12.12,” the statement said. 

It further said, “A three-way voting process determined the finalists.

“The World Athletics Council and the World Athletics Family cast their votes by email, while fans logged their decisions online via the World Athletics social media platforms where a record 1.3 million votes were registered.

“The World Athletics Council’s vote counted for 50% of the result, while the World Athletics Family’s votes and the public votes each counted for 25% of the final result.”

It noted that voting closed on 31 October.

The World Athletes of the Year will be announced on World Athletics’ social media platforms in early December, as part of the World Athletics Awards 2022.
