A Fulani herders’ group in the Northeast on Wednesday adopted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar as its candidate for the 2023 election.

At a large gathering in Yola, the Adamawa state capital, the herders shared kola nuts to seal the decision and called on President Muhammadu Buhari to support the deal.

Traditionally, Fulani people often share kola nuts to seal an irrevocable commitment to a course of action.

The Director of the Fulani group, Musa Ardo declared that their decision came as a result of Atiku's track record.

He challenged the crowd of Fulani people in attendance to return to their communities and settlements to campaign for Atiku.

According to him, they have taken the former vice president of Nigeria, Atiku as their presidential candidate.

“Atiku is our son, he's also a very good leader, that's why the Fulani race would back him up in the forthcoming election.

"We are calling on all Fulani people, including President Muhammadu Buhari to support our interest," Ardo said.

The group also endorsed the governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri in his re-election bid.
