The Lagos State Command in Nigeria has arrested a 23-year-old ex-convict, Yakub Yusuf for breaking into the state fire service building and stealing, just a few hours after he was released from prison.

The spokesperson for the police command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin who made this known in a statement on Thursday said Yusuf was arrested by personnel of the Rapid Response Squad on Saturday while he was committing the crime.

Hundeyin said that the suspect was released from prison some hours before he was rearrested for theft.

He was jailed for one month for stealing at Lagos State fuel dump, Ikeja, after he could not opt for the option of a fine.

The police spokesman said an NGO later facilitated his release by paying the fine 10 days after his conviction and that shortly after, he was caught stealing again.

“Yakub was arrested again after breaking into Lagos State Fire Service premises from where he stole valve covers of old fire truck under repairs.

“The CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi-led RRS has since transferred the suspect to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution,” the Hundeyin added.
