The fire service spokesperson added that an eyewitness said that one of the victims was still in the dam.

At least nine persons have been reported dead while three others were rescued alive in an auto accident in Kano State.

One person was declared missing after a Golf Wagon car plunged into a dam along the Kano-Katsina Road in the Gwarzo Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that the incident occurred on Saturday when a tyre of the car deflated and the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to swerve from its lane and plunge into the dam, Daily Trust reports.

The spokesman for the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusuf Abdullahi, who confirmed the incident said on Saturday at 6 pm, the service received a distress call from one Ali Mai Faci.

“Faci reported an incident at Fada dam, Gwarzo Local Government Area, Dayi Road, adding that firemen mobilised from Gwarzo fire station and arrived at the scene at about 7:10 pm.

“They discovered that an unregistered Golf Wagon car from Kano, heading to Katsina, plunged into Fada dam. Twelve unidentified persons were rescued on the spot,” Abdullahi said.

Abdullahi said with the effort of “our men and local fishers, we successfully rescued three persons alive, while nine people were unconscious. We conveyed all the victims to Gwarzo General Hospital for medical attention and doctors confirmed the death of 9 people among the victims”.

“Victims involved are; 2 girls of about 6 months; 4 women of about 30, 28, 27 years and 25 years old; as well as 6 men of about 48, 45, 42, 40, 35 and 28 years old,” he added.

The fire service spokesperson added that an eyewitness said that one of the victims was still in the dam.

“We will continue searching as normal. The cause of the incident is a tyre blast which led to the loss of control of the vehicle by the driver,” he said.
