National Assembly Commission Asks Senate President, Lawan, Speaker, Gbajabiamila To Wade Into Leadership Crisis

Some workers at the National Assembly Service Commission has lamented that the refusal of the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, to wade in and ensure due process at the commission is causing crisis and instability.

The workers told SaharaReporters that Lawan and Gbajabiamila had been misadvised and were playing to the gallery, which made the leadership crisis at the commission fester.

SaharaReporters had reported last week that there was disquiet at the commission over plots by some political weights to influence the appointment of a New Clerk for the commission.

It had been reported that the outgoing Clerk of the National Assembly, Oyetunde Ojo, was set to retire but there was plot to bribe members of the National Assembly Commission to appoint a non-legislative cadre as the New Clerk, identified as Sanni Magaji Tambuwal.

Tambuwal, who was the Secretary of the Finance and Accounts Department, is said to have the backing of a state governor from the North-West.

It was learnt on Thursday that efforts were already on course to ensure the confirmation of the newly appointed Acting Clerk to the National Assembly, Tambuwal, as the substantive clerk.

One of the sources said, “The process has been planned. Just like what happened in 2015, an opposition party is working with the outgoing Clerk to ensure that Tambuwal takes over from the former clerk, and ensure that it controls the structure of the parliament, after the 2023 general elections.

"The major financier of the whole issue is a governor from the North West, who has doled out N700 million to Commissioners of the National Assembly Service Commission, to carry out the grand plan. If you will recall that in 2015, there was a hijack of the National Assembly, due to the support of the Clerk of the National Assembly and some elements in the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party.”

"The silence of the current leaders of the National Assembly, most especially the Senate President and the Speaker House of Representative, Ahmad Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila, respectively on the issue is one which may allow the process to go unchecked. They are either being misadvised or playing to the hands of these people.

“If they do not take action, the situation may be uncontrollable, at the end of the day. Their silence is no longer golden. They should act fast and act now,” another source said.

"The National Assembly is a sacred institution and the hope of our democracy. If this plot to foist an unqualified clerk on the commission continues, it is indeed a sharp retrogression and a step to bastardise the future of the National Assembly."
