Over 300 Ballot Boxes Destroyed As Unknown Gunmen Burn Another Office Of Electoral Body, INEC In Ebonyi

The office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State has been set ablaze by unknown gunmen.

According to the statement, Onyeka Pauline Ugochi, the resident electoral commissioner for Ebonyi state, reported that the attack happened at 10.00 am on Sunday.

Okoye said although no casualties were reported, 340 ballot boxes, 130 voting cubicles, 14 electric generators and others were destroyed.

He added that the incident has been reported to the  Nigeria Police and other security agencies for investigation and further action.

The incident comes less than three months before the 2023 general elections.

Two weeks ago, suspected hoodlums hurled loaves of bread soaked with petrol into the INEC compound in Abeokuta, Ogun State, setting the building on fire.

A few hours later, the commission’s office in Oke-Iresi, Ede South Local Government Area of Osun State was also set ablaze by suspected arsonists.
