November 30, 2022

The National Assembly Service Commission had appointed Tambuwal to act as a substantial Clerk to the National Assembly following the directive by the Kadi Amshi-led Commission that the former Clerk, Amos Olatunde Ojo should proceed on three  months pre-retirement leave on November 14, 2022.

A civil society group under the aegis of the Coalition of Civil Society Network (CCSN) has rejected the appointment of Magaji Tambuwal, as the acting Clerk to the National Assembly.

However, Tambuwal’s appointment has been criticised by many analysts, groups and individuals.

Reacting to Tambuwal’s appointment, the Coalition of Civil Society Network in a statement by its convener, Ambassador Zakari Hashim, said that it “Frowns emphatically on the appointment of Magaji Tambuwal as substantial clerk of the Nigerian National Assembly.”

The Coalition maintained that Tambuwal’s appointment is “totally illegal and against section 14(5) of the national assembly act,” adding that “This is the greatest injustice and as a civil Society Networks, whose interest is against injustice practice and nepotism shall raise until well justice and reduce process is restored.”

It further stated that "The recent appointment of the new clerk of the national assembly is illegal and we called on the chairman of the national assembly to order a new process because section 14(5) is bold and clear enough, the section gives  priority to hierarchy and experience as  the fundamental requirements.

“The group further issued a 72 hours ultimatum for the commission to withdraw this appointment from the public domain and appoint the most senior officer in line with the national assembly act for appointment or face a civil disobedience which shall be followed by a legal suit.”
