Human Rights Violations Under Buhari Remind Of Military Rule – Peoples Redemption Party Demands Release Of Nigerian Student Remanded Over Tweet On First Lady
December 1, 2022

Comrade Abdulmajid Y. Daudu, National Chairman of the People's Redemptions Party (PRP) in a statement condemned the continued detention of the student.

The Peoples Redemption Party has called for the release of 23-year-old Aminu Adamu Muhammed, a student of the Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State, arrested over a tweet against Nigeria’s first lady, Aisha Buhari.

SaharaReporters had reported that Muhammed, a final-year student in the Department of Environmental Management and Toxicology in June 2022 posted on Twitter that Mrs Buhari had doubled in size after taking part in plundering the nation’s meagre resources as the masses endured hardship under her husband’s regime.

In his June 8, 2022 tweet, Muhammed chastised the First Lady in Hausa: “Su mama anchi kudin talkawa ankoshi”, which could be translated as “the mother has got fatter by eating masses’ money.”

According to Muhammed’s friends, he made the post because he was frustrated about the prolonged strike by universities across the country. The strike started in February 2022 and ended in October after eight months.

However, on November 8, the 23-year-old Muhammed was picked up by security operatives on campus and was reportedly beaten up following his arrest around noon.

SaharaReporters gathered that Muhammed was secretly arraigned in court on Tuesday.

Comrade Abdulmajid Y. Daudu, National Chairman of the People's Redemption Party (PRP) in a statement condemned the continued detention of the student.

The statement read, “OUR attention has been drawn to the unfortunate detention of Aminu Adamu Muhammad, final year student, Federal University Dutse, Jigawa State, who was reported arrested by law enforcement officers for a blog post on twitter allegedly disparaging the wife of the president, Hajiya Aisha Muhammadu Buhari.

“The said post is believed to have ridiculed the person of the President's wife. In response, Aminu Adamu Muhammad is reported to have been arrested, humiliated, and detained in police custody without bail or trial. All attempts by his colleagues to peacefully and lawfully secure his release, according to the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), have failed.

“WE, the People's Redemption Party are, with the strongest voice of the common people that we represent, calling on the authorities concerned to immediately and unconditionally release Aminu Adamu Muhammad and apologies to the entire Nigerian students and youths of this nation for his highhanded arrest and unlawful detention.

“In recent months we have noticed a spate of arbitrary arrests, beatings, threats and actual detention of individuals at the pleasure of highly placed public officials at state and federal levels across the country. This worrying trend of human rights violations is reminiscent of the dark days of military rule in the country.

“We, in the legacy PRP of Balarabe Musa, Aminu Kano, Michael Imodu, Alhaji Datti Malumfashi and a host of Nigeria's leading patriots, will not keep quiet in the face of growing political repression in the country. Our founding fathers and mothers fought against these abuses of human rights all their lives, and today we are continuing with the same struggle in the spirit of sacrifice and with fearlessness. Gone are the days when citizens fear bosses in government. Today we cherish our freedoms more than ever before.

“We therefore call on the authorities concerned to Set the Captive, Aminu Adamu Muhammad, FREE. Let the courts decide his fate and not the whims and caprices of executive powers.”
