The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has rejected the increment of tuition at the School of Health Information Technology (SHIM), Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba.

LUTH is a federal government-owned teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Lagos College of Medicine. It was established in 1962.

NANS Vice President, External Affairs, Akinteye Babatunde, in a statement said the association had received a report that the institution increased its tuition by 30% and also suspended the students’ union for going against the increment.

Akinteye described the action of the health institution authorities as the commercialisation of education.

The statement read, “Our attention has been drawn to the latest events and happenstances currently unfolding at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba, Mushin, Lagos State concerning the students, student's union and in particular, School of Health Information Technology (SHIM).

“After thorough investigation, the Office of the Vice President - External Affairs, NANS confirmed that the institution increased the tuition fees of School of Health Information Technology (SHIM), LUTH by 30% and due to the proactive nature of the Student's Union, the institution’s management suspended the Student's Union.

“It's only inconsiderate and wicked for any institution to increase the tuition fees amidst the inflation the nation's economy is currently in. It's more heartbreaking and shambolic for the institution to deny undergraduates from receiving lectures due to the inability to pay the incessant increase in tuition fees by 30%. It was also discovered that most lecturers rarely attend lectures, examination results of the past semester haven’t been released yet, and the institution's building is fast dilapidating. The learning environment is also not conducive as the roofs are leaking, buildings are cracked old and bad furniture amongst others.

“Comr. Akinteye Babatunde, NANS Vice President External Affairs on behalf of over 100 million students calls for the immediate reinstatement of the institution's Student's Union as the proscription act is illegal, barbaric and a direct abuse of power by the institution's management.

“Section 40 of the Nigerian Constitution, 1999 (as amended) critically highlights the Freedom of Association and as such, it overrules the illegal decision taken by the institution's management. We also call for the reduction of the tuition fees of SHIM-LUTH back to its previous tuition fee.

“The Office of the Vice President - External Affairs, NANS, is aware and totally frowns on the autocratic style of leadership the institution’s management employs and would lead a delegation of NANS zonal executives and NANS Lagos executives to pay a consultative visitation to the institution’s management to discuss and rub minds together on how we can better the welfare of the students of the institution and for the reinstatement of the student's union on campus.

“Comr. Akinteye Babatunde, aka BABTEE, urges the undergraduates of SHIM-LUTH to remain calm and civil on campus as the national leadership of NANS is working round the clock to ensure the student's union is reinstated immediately and unconditionally. We are also committed to the betterment of the welfare of the students.

“We appeal to the institution's management to harken to our demands as the leadership of NANS won't refrain from relocating her secretariat to the campus to seek justice and fight against intimidation of our students.”
