However, AP News reports that Chief James MacSween of York regional police said one of his officers shot and killed the suspect at a condo in Vaughan, Ontario.

Authorities late Sunday confirmed that a gunman whose identity was not revealed in a mass shooting killed five people in a condominium unit, in a Toronto suburb.

However, AP News reports that Chief James MacSween of York regional police said one of his officers shot and killed the suspect at a condo in Vaughan, Ontario.

MacSween, who described the incident as a “horrendous scene,” said that “six deceased. One of them is the subject. The other five are victims.”

According to him, a seventh person shot by the suspect was in the hospital and expected to survive.

He, however, said he didn’t have details on whether the shooter was a resident of the building.

AP News reports that Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit, which gets involved when there is a death or serious injury involving police, is investigating the incident.

Meanwhile, police evacuated the building but MacSween said there is no further threat to the community, adding that they hoped to have residents back in their units within hours.

It was reported that mass shootings are rare in Canada and Toronto has long been proud of itself as being one of the safest big cities in the world.

But with the incident, Canadians are said to be nervous about anything that might indicate they are moving closer to U.S. experiences with gun violence and mass shootings.
