The cousin of the deceased, Ambrose Somide, who confirmed the sad incident, said he could not explain what might be behind the murder.

Tragedy struck in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital on Sunday as suspected arsonists set a couple ablaze shortly after they returned from crossover church service.

The couple, Kehinde Fatinoye and Bukola worked for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNNAB) respectively before their gruesome murder.

Vanguard reports that the couple were killed and burnt in their private residence at Government Reservation Area (GRA), Ibara in Abeokuta.

They were said to have been trailed to their house after the church service. Their son was reportedly abducted before the assailants burnt the house.

A source at the residence of the deceased, who spoke to journalists said the suspected arsonists reportedly kidnapped the son alongside the home help and threw them into a river along the Adigbe-Obada axis of the town.

The victims were burnt beyond recognition and their remains were packed by policemen and other health officials who later arrived at the scene.

The cousin of the deceased, Ambrose Somide, who confirmed the sad incident, said he could not explain what might be behind the murder.

The Acting Vice Chancellor of FUNAAB, Prof.Olusola Kehinde, described the incident as heartless and brutal.

Kehinde said the university community received the death of Mrs Fatinoye, a senior staff member of the school, and her husband with rude shock.

He described Mrs Fatinoye as a committed employee of the school who was easy-going and friendly.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the state police command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident, describing it as an assassination.

"When the couple were killed, their remains were equally set ablaze.

“After the dastard act, the couple’s son and their housemaid were kidnapped and thrown into a river. Though the housemaid has been rescued alive, we are yet to see the son," he said.

Oyeyemi, however, revealed that one person has been arrested in connection with the incident, adding an investigation into the incident was ongoing.
