The former Governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim has said that the attack on his convoy was a clear assassination attempt on his life and that of his family members.
Ohakim who stated this in an 11-paragraph ‘Thank-you statement’ signed by him and issued on Sunday, called the police authority to ensure that no stone was left unturned in finding the attackers.
He also urged security agencies to find a lasting solution to the insecurity situation in the country.
SaharaReporters had reported that the former Imo governor was attacked by gunmen last Monday evening around Ori-Agu axis in the Ehime Mbano Local Government Area (LGA) of the state while returning to Owerri from his hometown, in company with his daughter and son.
Although he narrowly escaped, the assailants killed four of his police escorts.
Ohakim while thanking the Imo people and entire Nigerians for their thoughts and prayers, said, “The story has been told and retold and though some versions were not altogether accurate, the important thing is that I survived what was a clear attempt to assassinate me.
“Even though the nationwide condemnation of such a despicable act was to be expected, I noticed, in all the messages and calls I received, deep personal love and regard for me.”
He lamented the murder of four of his police escorts during the attack and commiserated with their families, promising that they will not suffer untold hardship.
The former governor expressed optimism that the attackers will be fished out and brought to justice.
