He said he could not raise the bills of N120,000 for the treatments of his sick baby who is on admission at the National hospital and N57,000 for the treatment of his wife who is also on admission at Nyanya General hospital in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja due to his condition.

A visually impaired 37 years old man, Emmanuel David, has called on well-meaning Nigerians and organisations to come to his aid in the payment of N177,000 hospital bills of his sick wife and new born baby girl who are in critical conditions at different hospitals in Abuja shortly after her wife put to bed through a cesarean section surgery.

He said he could not raise the bills of N120,000 for the treatments of his sick baby who is on admission at the National hospital and N57,000 for the treatment of his wife who is also on admission at Nyanya General hospital in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja due to his condition.

Emmanuel who is a resident of Masaka in Nasarawa State had registered his pregnant wife, Grace at a Primary HealthCare Center in the area for Antenatal since she took in.

SaharaReporters gathered that Grace was expected to deliver on December 13th 2022 going by the result of the scan but the labour eventually started on December 31st 2022.

It was learnt that the nurses at the health centre had made frantic effort to deliver her but suddenly jettisoned the idea and made a referral to Nyanya General hospital upon realising that she had undergone a surgical delivery before.

In an attempt not to complicate the matter, Grace was eventually transferred and admitted to Nyanya General hospital on January 1st 2023 where a cesarean section surgery was carried out. But upon the delivery the baby was said to have been diagnosed with kidney problems and jaundice.

It was gathered that the baby also swallowed some water (amniotic fluid) from the mother's womb which had led to her difficulty in breathing.

The situation compelled the doctors to make a referral to the National hospital Abuja where the baby would have access to the requisite medical facilities and medication.

This time around only the baby was moved to National hospital while the mother was still being treated at Nyanya General hospital

Jaundice in newborns is the yellow coloring in an infant’s skin. It occurs when bilirubin builds up in the baby’s blood.

SaharaReporters gathered that the father could not pay the bills as demanded by the hospital management due to his condition though the hospital went ahead with the treatment.

The baby was therefore placed under oxygen for 5 days while the doctors are still battling to save the life of the mother who is said to be having harrowing pains arising from the urinary catheter which was inserted into her body.

Grace was said to have been complaining of sharp pains caused by the flexible tube used to empty her bladder and collect urine in her drainage bag.

The condition has made it difficult for her to extract breast milk for the baby who is still at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) receiving treatment

The husband who have been running helter-skelter said his wife and baby were still in the hospital because of his inability to pay the N57,000 bills for the Cesarean Section of the wife and N120,000 for the baby respectively.

Emmanuel has been shuttling between the two hospitals with the help of his sister to collect the breast milk from the wife and take it to the baby to survive.

Emmanuel who is also an orphan spoke to SaharaReporters in tears saying he was not born blind, that his predicament started as far back as 2009 when he was schooling at Government Secondary School (GSS) Akwada in Nasarawa State.

The community is the hometown of the former Governor and National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Adamu.

“I don't have any money because of my condition. My wife and baby are still lying in the hospital. I want to use this medium to appeal to Nigerians to assist me in whatever capacity so that they can discharge my wife and baby from the hospital. I am pleading to Nigerians, no amount is small.”
