SaharaReporters had earlier reported the arrest of the Labour Party chieftain at the Terminal 1 of the Lagos airport.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has said former presidential aide, Doyin Okupe was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Thursday morning by Nigeria’s secret police, Department of State Services, based on a watch-list request issued in 2016.

SaharaReporters had earlier reported the arrest of the Labour Party chieftain at the Terminal 1 of the Lagos airport.

Okupe later tweeted that he had been released by the EFCC and that he was offered an apology for the erroneous arrest.

One of his lawyers, Tolu Babaleye had said the former Director General of the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) of the Labour Party (LP) was on his way to London for medical treatment.

A statement issued by the EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwajaren on Thursday said, “The Department of State Services, DSS, today, January 12, informed the Commission of the interception of Dr. Doyin Okupe, former presidential adviser, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

“The Service acted on a Watch-list request issued on July 18, 2016, over six years before his recent conviction on money laundering charges by the Federal High Court, Abuja.

“The Commission was in the process of formally lifting the watch-list before his interception and will expedite action in this regard.”
