APGA Governorship Candidate In Ebonyi Escapes Death As Gunmen Open Fire, Kill Driver; Orderly, Others Injured

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, in Ebonyi State, Prof. Bernard Odo has been attacked by gunmen suspected to be assassins.

Although the identities of the assailants were yet to be ascertained, Mr Godwin Chinonso, a former Personal Assistant to Prof Odo confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters on Friday.

 

According to various reports, Odo, who was the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) during Governor David Umahi's first term in office, was returning from Agba where he had gone for his campaign when he ran into an ambush at the Rest House area, along the Enugu/Abakaliki Expressway.

 

The gunmen, it was gathered parked a Sienna minivan along the road and opened fire on his convoy immediately after sighting his vehicle. They were said to have particularly aimed the shots at Odo's vehicle which was completely shattered.

 

Although he escaped, his driver was not that lucky as the gunmen reportedly killed him during the attack.

His orderly and three others sustained bullet wounds.

 

Speaking to our correspondent, Chinonso said it was the second major attempt on Odo’s life after he was attacked in the Izzi Local Government Area, where he had gone for his campaign.

 

"I went to hospital morgue where the lifeless body of his driver is lying. His security men are currently receiving treatment at accident and emergency at a hospital in Abakaliki.

 

"Hoodlums who are suspected to be state actors also burnt his pilot vehicle. This incident happened around 9pm on Thursday night," Chinonso said.

 

Meanwhile, efforts to speak with the Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chris Anyanwu were unsuccessful as he did not answer his calls.
