Mass Protest Continues In Ondo State, Roads Blocked Over Naira Notes, Fuel Scarcity
February 8, 2023

Some residents had on Tuesday blocked the Ore-Benin expressway to register their displeasure over the incident.

Aggrieved youths in Ondo State have again taken to the streets in expression of frustration over the scarcity of naira notes and Premium Motor Spirits (PMS), popularly called petrol.

The police in Ondo State had earlier warned residents against embarking on public protests over the scarcity of naira banknotes and petrol in the state.

However, some residents on Tuesday blocked the Ore-Benin expressway to register their displeasure over the incident.

On Wednesday also, the residents have again taken over the roads in the state capital, Akure – a development which has caused gridlock in the state capital.

In October 2022, Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), announced the plan to redesign the N200, N500, and N1,000 notes, and asked Nigerians to deposit their old notes before January 31, 2023 when they would cease to be legal tender.

Although the deadline was extended to February 10, many Nigerians have found it difficult to obtain the new naira notes.

Before the cash shortage, Nigerians have been dealing with months-long petrol scarcity across the country with the product now being sold for as high as N1,000 per litre in some states.

Meanwhile, the latest protest which is ongoing in Akure has caused gridlock in the state capital.

SaharaReporters learnt that the action has resulted in travellers plying the Ilesha-Akure-Owo-Benin-Abuja route getting stranded for hours.

One of the organisers of the protest, Oluyemi Fasipe said security operatives were informed before they took to the streets to protest the difficulty in buying petrol and withdrawing cash.

“Join Us At Road Block In Akure The Only Venue Of Today’s Peaceful Protest Against Petrol Price Hike/Scarcity & Naira Scarcity.

“All The Security Operatives Have Been Notified And They Will Be On ground, No Other Protest Will Be Allowed Anywhere Else & Violence Will Not Be Tolerated,” he said.
