In the presidential and National Assembly elections held on February 25, the PDP and Labour Party candidates lost to Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress - a victory which is still being contended at the election tribunal.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, and his Labour Party’s counterpart, Peter Obi, have decried the low voter turnout in Saturday’s governorship and State Assembly elections.

In the presidential and National Assembly elections held on February 25, the PDP and Labour Party candidates lost to Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress - a victory which is still being contended at the election tribunal.

While commenting on Saturday’s governorship polls, Atiku, who had several times decried the manner the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted the February 25 elections, said, “INEC is already a discredited organisation. Sadly, there's a low voter turnout in today's election, no thanks to INEC’s partisanship and incompetence that delivered a sham election on February 25. I hope the electoral body will seize this second chance to redeem its discredited reputation.”

Also commenting, Obi said, “People see that if their vote does not make any meaning, why do they have to come out and vote? I encourage every registered Nigerian voter, who has not yet voted to go and do so.”

Meanwhile, the Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai said, “Process has been smooth except in some places where people have been asked to vote for a particular party. Let us hope more people come out. The voter turnout is still low. We are optimistic.”
