Many, including passers-by, were reportedly caught up in the melee, sustaining varying degrees of injury in the process.

The IMN members were protesting along the road, demanding the release of the travel documents of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, and his wife Zeenat by the Federal Government when the incident happened.

A source identified those killed as Shaheed Ali Sulaiman, Shaheed Yaseer Ismail Abdul'aziz, Shaheed Muhammad Rabil, Shaheed Abba Abubakar Nura, Shaheed Ibraheem Abdullahi and Abdulmalik Ibrahim (Yawale).

He said the IMN members started their procession from Gwamna Road junction heading to Bakinruwa along the expressway when they met the governor’s convoy coming in the opposite direction.

The source claimed that the security details attached to the governor’s convoy immediately opened fire on the innocent protesters, and in the process killed some of their members and injured several others.

He asked why the security details would open fire on innocent people unprovoked.
