Islamic State has claimed responsibility for an attack that killed no fewer than 10 people and injured many others in an eastern village in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The group made this known in a telegram account for the group on Monday, Reuters reports.

“This is our first attack in Lubero province and this is expansion for the IS operations,” the account said.

In 2021, the ISIS Shura (consultative) Council finalised plans to visit the West African Wilaya of the Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP).

The visit was said to be on the instruction of ISIS leader, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Quraishi and it was part of the group’s effort to reorganise its global structure.

It was learnt the purpose of the ISIS visit was also to provide training and funding as well as to deploy more mercenaries to fight in sub-Saharan Africa after losing a lot of its terrorist fighters.

“They are also to join forces with ISWAP to eliminate terrorists of the Bakura (Buduma) Faction of Boko Haram,” a source said.

The ISIS Shura (consultative) Council – which reports directly to the executive branch – is the caliphate’s religious monitor, appointed to make sure that all the local councils and governors are sticking to ISIS’ version of Islamic law, a CNN report noted.
