Some hoodlums attacked and killed two policemen on stop-and-search duty in the Enugu metropolis on Sunday.

The state police command's spokesman Daniel Ndukwe who confirmed the unfortunate incident told SaharaReporters that two of the assailants were suspected to have been killed during a gun duel with police operatives.

Ndukwe disclosed that the vehicle used by assailants had been recovered with blood stains and "bullet piercings," adding that the state police commissioner, Ahmed Ammani, had launched a manhunt for the hoodlums.

Giving an insight on the attack, Ndukwe, a deputy superintendent of police, said, "Operatives serving in Uwani Police Division, while on routine stop and search duty at Osadebe Street, along Campus Gate Road, by Kenyatta Market Enugu, were Sunday, March 26, 2023 at about 11.30 am, attacked by armed hoodlums in their numbers operating in SUVs, who suddenly opened fire on them.

"Many of the hoodlums escaped with varying degrees of fatal gunshot injuries in the ensuing gun duel, while two of the operatives, who sustained severe gunshot injuries, were moved to the hospital, where they were confirmed dead and their corpses deposited in the mortuary for preservation.

"Consequently, a manhunt of the assailants, which was immediately launched, resulted in the miscreants abandoning the black-coloured Mercedes Benz ML 350 4Matic Jeep they used for the operation along Enugu/Port-Harcourt Road, Enugu.

"The vehicle, riddled with gunshots and blood stains, has been recovered. The recovery of the vehicle and the signs thereof corroborates preliminary investigation, which suggests that at least two of the hoodlums were neutralised."

"CP Ammani, has ordered Tactical/Operational Operatives of the Command to sustain the ongoing manhunt operation," Ndukwe noted.

He said anything short of bringing the assailants to justice to assuage the unfortunate loss of the two operatives would not be accepted.

The command's spokesperson said the police commissioner urged the people of the state and the general public to assist the police with useful information that would aid the speedy arrest of the suspects.

He called on owners of medical facilities to report any person or persons, dead or alive, sighted with gunshot injuries to the police.
