Nigerian Senate Extends 2022 Budget Implementation To One Month After Buhari's Tenure

The Senate also approved Implementation of the 2022 supplementary budget of 819.5 billion naira till June 30, 2023, which will run concurrently with the 2023 Budget.

Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber, the Senate on Tuesday, further extended implementation of capital component of the 2022 appropriation act from March 31 to June 30, 2023, a month after President Muhammadu Buhari had left office.

The Senate also approved Implementation of the 2022 supplementary budget of 819.5 billion naira till June 30, 2023, which will run concurrently with the 2023 Budget.

SaharaReporters had reported that the Senate had in December 28, 2022 approved extension of the implementation of the 2022 budget till March 31, 2023.

The National Assembly approved N17.12 trillion for the 2022 fiscal year in December 2021.

The upper legislative chamber’s resolution to extend the 2022 budget by three months is sequel to a request by Buhari.

Ibrahim Gobir, majority leader, of the Senate had while presenting report, told his colleagues that it is imperative to extend the budget implementation as a result of key projects.

“Because of some key projects, it is expedient to extend the implementation [of the budget] because of key projects that are not provided for in the 2023 budget,” he said.
