President Muhammadu Buhari has flagged off oil exploration activities in Nasarawa state, North Central Nigeria.

Buhari, who took to his Twitter handle to announce the development, called on the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited and its partners to do everything necessary to mitigate the environmental consequences of the oil exploration activities.

Expressing his delight at the development, President Buhari said, "I am pleased with the work @nnpclimited is doing to add to Nigeria’s considerable hydrocarbon assets, by extending its crude oil exploration in the Frontier Basins (including the Middle Benue Trough, which has led to today’s event) as well as in the Ultra-Deepwater Niger Delta.

"Today I virtually flagged off oil exploration activities in Nasarawa State, by @nnpclimited. The spud-in of the Ebenyi-A Well will ultimately deliver outcomes that benefit surrounding communities, lead to greater prosperity for all Nigerians, & enhance our overall energy security.

"I thank the Government and people of Nasarawa State, and especially the host community, for their support and collaboration towards the success of this exploration campaign.

"I have directed @nnpclimited and its partners to do everything necessary to mitigate the environmental consequences of these oil exploration activities."

He added, "I am pleased with the work @nnpclimited is doing to add to Nigeria’s considerable hydrocarbon assets, by extending its crude oil exploration in the Frontier Basins (including the Middle Benue Trough, which has led to today’s event) as well as in the Ultra-Deepwater Niger Delta.

"I am also very pleased that development work is already in progress following the commercial discoveries of hydrocarbons in the Kolmani Area of the Upper Benue Trough. I commend and congratulate @nnpclimited, NUPRC and other partners for all ongoing efforts in this regard."
