A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has convicted and sentenced one Praise Gelson and Usman Garba to seven years jail term for breaking into the home of a former first lady, Patience Jonathan, to steal valuables worth millions of naira.

This was stated in a decision delivered by Justice Adolphus Enebeli, who also convicted and sentenced one Tamunoala Alatoru to six months in prison for failure to perform her duties.

Dame Patience Faka Jonathan was a Nigerian civil servant who served as the first lady of Nigeria from 2010 to 2015 and second lady of Nigeria from 2007 to 2010. She is the wife of former president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. She also served as a Permanent Secretary in Bayelsa State.

The defendants were first arraigned in court in November 2022 on three counts of conspiracy, armed robbery, and attempted murder of the former President's wife.

The trial judge, Justice Ebebeli, found the first and third defendants, Gelson and Garba, guilty of armed robbery and attempted murder, noting that the prosecution counsel proved his case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Ebebeli also ruled that the prosecution proved his case against the second defendant, Alatoru, particularly on negligence in her duties, and that she should be sentenced to six months in prison.
