According to NANS, the increment of the tuition fees is a way of inflicting more hardship on NIgerian students in the institution.
Nigerian students under the umbrella of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Southwest Zone, have demanded that the management of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) reverses the increased tuition fee of the institution with immediate effect.
The students Union in a statement signed and made available to SaharaReporters on Saturday by its Public Relations Officer, Comrade Awoyinfa Opeoluwa, frowned at the over 100% increment of the university's tuition fees by the management.
According to NANS, the increment of the tuition fees is a way of inflicting more hardship on NIgerian students in the institution.
Opeoluwan stated that one of the student union representatives, whose identity was not revealed, said that the University management held a meeting with the student union body to work together on the preposition increment.
He explained that the proposed new tuition fees showed that Returning Students from 100 level to 500 level whose current fees is between N14,000 and N16,000 will now pay N60,000, while newly admitted students who are supposed to pay a total of N50,000 will now pay about N100,000.
"It’s pitiful and sardonic to say that Nigerian students are paying for what they don’t get. The University should make a detailed explanation on the finances of the University and how it’s been spent / utilized.
"It’s not apologetic to say the University management under the leadership of Prof. Adenike Oladiji has been wicked to Nigerian Students especially indigent students who are striving hard to attain a first degree through self-sponsorship.
"As the body that governs all student organizations in Nigeria. The zonal leadership of NANS (Southwest) will not hesitate to relocate her secretariat to FUTA if the proposed hardship on Nigerian Students through tuition fees increment is not reversed.
"It is important to call the attention of the federal government to the implementation of 2009 FG/ASUU agreement on tertiary institutions, especially the funding aspect of the agreement which is one of the reasons for hardship in the public University sector.
"We plead with the President of the Country, Muhammadu Buhari GCFR to please look into the funding system, subventions for our public universities," he stated.
