The Nigeria Police Force has asked the country’s electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to prosecute the Kogi Local Government Chairman, Joseph Omuya Salami, who was caught on camera destroying electoral materials and intimidating INEC officers during the February 25, 2023 election.

Recall that SaharaReporters published the video of Salami who is the Chairman of Adavi Local Government Area, where he was filmed while destroying votes belonging to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senatorial Candidate for Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan.

Escorted by some armed officers of the Nigeria Police Force and thugs, Salami had stormed polling unit 034 located along Eid Prayer Ground, Nagazi/Farm Centre Ward and Polling Unit 033 Mikab Model School, Nagazi/Farm Center Ward, Adavi Local Government Area of the state where he destroyed polling materials, ballot papers, intimidated voters and harassed electoral officials.

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), had written to the police and the INEC to probe the video of Salami’s activities on the election day.

On Tuesday morning, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, asked the INEC to prosecute the case, saying that the policemen identified in the incident had been dealt with.

He assured that he would compile all the cases involving policemen and share to the members of the public.

“This Kogi case is one of the cases that will be prosecuted by INEC, while the policemen in charge have been dealt with. I will compile all the cases involving policemen and share. Though many will still not believe us, we will be transparent and do the needful on these cases,” Adejobi said.
