Nigerian Police Detain Assistant Superintendent Accused Of Stealing Weapons For Two Years Without Trial As ‘Authority Shops For Evidence’

It was learnt that he sued the police for violating his fundamental human rights in 2022 but the matter has been adjourned a few times.

The Nigeria Police Force has detained an Assistant Superintendent of Police identified as Thomas Eteng for two years without trial, SaharaReporters learnt on Wednesday.

Eteng, who is being held at Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (FCIID), was until his arrest and detention serving as an armourer at the Police Zone 6, Calabar, Cross River State, Southern Nigeria.

Police sources told SaharaReporters on Wednesday that Eteng could not be tried or charged because the authorities he stepped on their toes when he was an armourer at Zone 6 were still looking for credible evidence to file against him in court.

One of the sources noted that Eteng is facing travails because he is poor.

It was learnt that he sued the police for violating his fundamental human rights in 2022 but the matter has been adjourned a few times.

“No senior police officer had been subjected to such mental torture as he is going through,” a source said.

"I’m bringing this inhumane treatment to the media and bringing it to the public knowledge because the guy in question, ASP Thomas Eteng, has money or someone to speak for him. He is really suffering and I believe the media can help him bring his matter to public knowledge.

“He is suffering without end. I don't know how the media can help him. He sued the police for fundamental human rights last year and to challenge his continued detention, but they kept on adjourning the case for one reason or the other. He has been detained for two years,” a source said.

SaharaReporters learnt that the case is before the Federal High Court 4 in Abuja, and was last adjourned till May 22, 2023.

However, efforts made by SaharaReporters to get the reaction of the Force Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi were not successful as he neither answered his calls nor reply to a text message sent to him.
