Aggrieved students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile- Ife, Osun State, on Wednesday, shut down the student union building to protest against the death of one of their colleagues
SaharaReporters had reported that Okoli Ahinze, a 500-level student of the school was mobbed to death for alleged theft.
It was gathered that the deceased was beaten to death inside the Awo Hall on Monday. The student was said to have been rushed to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Ile-Ife after complications on Tuesday.
Doctors on duty confirmed him dead when he was taken to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital.
It was gathered that the student was alleged to have stolen a mobile phone at Awo Hall.
However, the protesting students stormed the students’ union building, on Wednesday and shut it down.
The Public Relations Officer of the Union, Ogunperi Taofeek Olalekan told SaharaReporters that some persons had been arrested in connection to the death of the student.
He said, "Yes there was a protest this morning, but the protesters have been dispatched.
"Also, the issue is now under investigation and some persons have been arrested in connection to the death of the students.”
"Police are investigating at the moment, the school security department and leadership of the union are also working with them to seriously ensure that all persons involved in the action are arrested and duly punished," he added.
The spokesperson for the state police command, Yemisi Opalola, confirmed the arrest of two people and that investigation was ongoing.
