Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Wednesday, in Adamawa state, thronged the office of the Department of State Services (DSS) to demand the release of their detained colleagues.

The protesters took off from the party's state headquarters and went to the DSS office in Yola where they presented their complaint letter.

Leading the protesters, the State Chairman of the party, Barrister Tahir Shehu said the protest was necessary because of fellow members detained since last Wednesday by the secret police.

Meanwhile, the detained PDP members have approached the court to seek the enforcement of their fundamental human right to liberty.

The applicants, Yusuf Mohammed, Zira John and Solomon Abafras, claimed that they have been held in a DSS detention facility for over seven days without trial.

The trio were arrested for allegedly assaulting a DSS assistant director, Suleiman Halilu Isa, who accused the disgraced Adamawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), Hudu Yunusa-Ari of collecting a bribe of N2 billion to rig the governorship election in the state.

Isa, in a viral video, alleged that the REC, Yunusa-Ari collected N2 billion to declare the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Aishatu Dahiru Binani, winner of the governorship election.

In the video, he was however seen to have been physically assaulted.

SaharaReporters on April 16, 2023 reported that the DSS announced that it had commenced an investigation into the attack on one of its personnel in Adamawa State, which was captured on video.

As part of the investigation, Mohamed, John and Abafras were said to have been arrested and locked up by the DSS on Wednesday, April 19, 2023.

Therefore, in separate applications filed on April 20, 2023 by Mohammed, John and Abafras at the Adamawa State High court, the trio asked Justice Christopher Dominic Mapeo to enforce their right to liberty.

The court had fixed Tuesday, April 25, 2023, for a hearing, but the case could not be heard for failure to serve the court process on the DSS.

As it stands, the matter has been adjourned to April 27, 2023, to enable the lawyers representing the applicants to serve the DSS.
