The Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has disclosed that the level of medical schools some Nigerians attended in war-torn Ukraine is not up to the country's standard.

Dabiri-Erewa said this while featuring on a Channels TV programme on Thursday.

The NiDCOM chair said like the case of students who returned to Nigeria from Ukraine last year, universities in the country have made offers to admit Nigerian students returning from Sudan too.

She said, “We did it with Ukraine, when they came back, there were plans to continue education for them.

“Although the medical students among them had issues because they found out that the level of their medical school was not even as high as that of Nigeria so it was difficult to place them where they wanted.

“But, yes, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs actually created a division for that and ensured that those who wanted to continue their education did.”

She, however, added that a lot of them wanted to return to Ukraine.

As regards the students returning from Sudan, she said “let us receive them safely and then we take it (from there)”.

“In fact, universities are already offering and have reached out to us that when they do come back and they want to continue their education, they should contact them.

“So all that shouldn’t be a problem at all," Abike-Dabiri added.

The NiDCOM boss said it is important for the returnees to be reunited with their families, adding that funds had been approved for the necessary activities.

“So the first thing for us at this point in time is for them to reunite with their families. The issue of education shouldn’t be a problem.”

SaharaReporters reported Wednesday that Nigerians were being moved from the warring North East African country to Egypt from where they will be airlifted to Nigeria.
