The Bauchi State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has arrested and detained a Bauchi Chief, Gung Zaar of Zaar Land, His Royal Majesty, Ishaku Komo.

A police source told SaharaReporters on Thursday that Komo, a retired Air Commodore with the Nigerian Air Force was being detained at the Bauchi State Police Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department. However, he said it was for a yet-to-be-disclosed offence.

Komo's son Polycarp Irmiya, who confirmed the arrest and detention of his father, told SaharaReporters that he was invited on Wednesday by the State Commissioner of Police, CP Alhassan Aminu over a crisis that erupted in the Sang Community that was about a chieftaincy tussle.

Irmiya who said he was still at the police headquarters narrated how the police detained his father without telling him the offence he committed.

He said, "There was a crisis in one Community Sang in Bogoro Local Government Area of Bauchi State. The crisis erupted over a chieftaincy tussle which claimed the life of a 70-year-old man. On Wednesday, the CP invited him to come and get his side of the story only to be told that he's under detention."

He added, "The incident occurred under the domain of his Chiefdom. And another rumour from some sources said some persons wrote a petition that he was responsible for what happened.

"From the police source, the principal suspect never gave any information that indicted or showed that the traditional ruler had any hand in what happened."

Lamenting the mistreatment given to his father, Irmiya said that they lost his mother and the burial would hold today (Thursday), yet the police still prevented him from attending the burial and detained him for an action he knew nothing about.

Meanwhile, a source told SaharaReporters that Christian Chiefs in the state and other parts of Northern Nigeria are constantly being harassed and intimidated by security agencies, who were described as tools in the hands of northern political leaders who are largely Muslims.

It was gathered that northern governors who are Muslims have stepped up harassment of Christian Chiefs after the February 25 presidential election, especially those in communities that voted massively for the Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi.
