More personnel of the Nigerian Army have been dragged before the Human Rights Panel over alleged abortion of over 10,000 pregnancies of girls and women who were raped by Boko-Haram terrorists.
Brigadier General Haruna Garba, the Chief of Staff of the Nigerian Army Amour Corps (NAAC) Headquarters, Bauchi State, and former Garrison Commander, 7 Division Garrison Maiduguri, also testified before a seven-member panel led by Justice Abdul Aboki, a former Supreme Court justice.
Garba denied the allegation first published by Reuters that the military carried out mass abortions in the North East for over a decade as part of plans to eliminate the offspring of Boko Haram fighters.
He claimed that the military could not have been involved in such crimes after being at the forefront of efforts to restore peace in the North East and other parts of the country.
According to him, the allegation is only meant to demoralise military personnel in the theatre of war at a time when they appear to be winning the battle against terrorist elements.
So far, nine top military officers have testified before the seven-member expert panel during the third round of hearings.
Brig. General Tuni Isah, the former Chief of Staff of the Military Multinational Joint Task Force, who also testified before the panel on Friday, described the allegation "unimaginable."
He stated that the Nigerian Army is a professional organisation that follows the law.
The Nigerian military had allegedly aborted a minimum of 10,000 pregnancies since at least 2013 when it conducted a secret, illegal abduction programme for women and girls in the northeast.
According to a report by Reuters, many of the women and girls had been kidnapped and raped by Islamist militants.
