The Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State Command has explained why its operatives invaded the home of the Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, where his wife’s phone was seized.
SaharaReporters had first reported on Tuesday that the dare-devil police operatives stormed the residence of Seun Kuti and ransacked it in search of evidence to nail the Afrobeat singer.
SaharaReporters had learnt that the police officers thoroughly combed it as they fished for evidence to charge him with a separate crime.
It was learnt that the officers took the musician along when they went to his house and seized his wife’s mobile phone.
“The police came with him to search his house and seized his wife’s phone.
“They’re are looking for evidence to charge him with a different crime,” a source privy to the operation had told SaharaReporters on Tuesday.
On Monday, SaharaReporters exclusively reported that the police drove Seun’s wife away from the police station when she brought him food after calling her all sorts of names and threatening to arrest her as an accomplice.
But earlier on Tuesday, SaharaReporters reported that the Chief Magistrate Court in Yaba, Lagos granted bail to the musician.
Nigerians had condemned the police for not only invading Seun’s residence but for also forcefully taking away his wife’s phone during the operation.
But reacting to the criticisms, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, on Wednesday morning said that the police invaded Seun’s home because they stumbled on certain suspicious things that needed to be proven beyond reasonable doubt.
The police spokesperson said, “In the course of our investigation, we stumbled on certain suspicious things that needed to be proven/disproved beyond reasonable doubt.
“We, therefore, applied for and duly got a search warrant from the court, which we have executed. Investigation continues.
“No law restricts the police to investigating only the initial crime. World over, Police Departments stumble on other crimes while investigating an initial crime and we are duty bound to investigate them in line with our mandate of detecting and investigating crimes.”
