The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon.

One man has been arrested after a car smashed into the gate of Downing Street, the entrance of the United Kingdom Prime Minister’s official residence.

The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon.

Armed cops have sealed off Whitehall after the small hatchback rammed into the entrance of the PM's official residence, Downing Street - where Rishi Sunak was believed to be working at the time.

Scotland Yard confirmed there were no injuries but a man has been held on suspicion of both criminal damage and dangerous driving, The Sun UK reports.

Footage shows the car driving across the central London Road behind the Cenotaph war memorial before careering head-on into the iron gates.

Officers have shut virtually the entire road in Westminster and the Met confirmed that a vehicle had crashed into the gates.

The car had its boot searched by cops.

Scotland Yard said: "Armed officers arrested a man at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving.

"There are no reports of any injuries. Enquiries are ongoing."
