According to a Twitter user, @YinkaMee who shared the video on his page, the VIO officer was about to impound the motorist’s car because he parked at the wrong place in Katampe.

In a viral video, a motorist is seen cocking his gun at a Vehicle Inspector Officer (VIO) attempting to confiscate the motorist’s car for allegedly violating traffic regulations in Abuja.

According to a Twitter user, @YinkaMee who shared the video on his page, the VIO officer was about to impound the motorist’s car because he parked at the wrong place in Katampe.

“A motorist has been captured cocking a gun at a Vehicle Inspector Officer (VIO) who wanted to impound his car after he reportedly parked on the wrong direction in Katampe, Abuja,” the Twitter user said.

A close examination of the video revealed that the motorist, who appeared to be in his early 60s, accused the VIO officer of stealing his vehicle.

As passersby attempted to stop him from firing the gun at the VIO, he was heard repeatedly screaming, "Are you want to thief? (Do you want to steal?)"

Meanwhile, SaharaReporters’ previous stories had revealed how some Vehicle Inspection Officers at Asokoro, Abuja – Nigeria’s capital – had been found to be involved in corrupt practices against the dictates of their jobs.

For instance, VIO personnel flagged down a Honda saloon car in Asokoro in February 2020, inspecting its documents and looking for an offence. When they found one of the back tyres had worn out, they impounded the car and drove it to their office.

Our correspondent, who trailed the team to their Asokoro office, saw how owners of impounded vehicles at the facility tried frantically to get their automobiles released by pleading with the officers to accept the amounts of money they could afford.

The owner of the Honda car was eventually asked to pay N4,500 after negotiating with the officials.

The middle-aged man was later allowed to leave with his vehicle without being mandated to fix the terribly bad tyre that posed a great threat to his life, including those of other road users.
