The president added that despite several ultimatums, the shipping companies had refused to improve workers’ welfare.

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) on Monday morning commenced nationwide strike action due to unresolved issues relating to the poor welfare of its members.

The workers on Monday protested in Lagos with placards explaining the reason for the industrial action and advocating their demands from the Nigerian government.

“We demand a review of the shipping workers’ gratuity,” one of the placards read.

Last Thursday, SaharaReporters reported that the President-General of MWUN, Prince Adewale Adeyanju at a press briefing directed all his members to prepare for strike action on Monday (today)

The president added that despite several ultimatums, the shipping companies had refused to improve workers’ welfare.

He lamented that workers in the shipping industry were being treated like slaves.

In February 2022, the union also declared a 14-day strike over the International Oil Companies’ non-compliance with the Extant Stevedoring Regulations known as Government Marine Notice 106 of 2014.

The union alleged that the International Oil Companies, IOCs, refused to allow the Stevedoring Companies access to their platforms to commence operations, denying registered dockworkers and stevedoring companies to operate in the IOCs’ platforms as required by law.
