A relative of the parties involved, who is privy to the incident, told SaharaReporters that Mr Gbadebo dragged his wife, Olashile to the police station after accusing her of swindling him to buy a landed property.
Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Ogun State Command, Ifo Division, has reportedly demanded N540,000 before granting bail to Oriwege Olashile, a woman who had been detained for days over a rift with her husband, Dare Gbadebo.
A relative of the parties involved, who is privy to the incident, told SaharaReporters that Mr Gbadebo dragged his wife, Olashile to the police station after accusing her of swindling him to buy a landed property.
It was learnt that Gbadebo had Olashile locked up at the Ifo divisional police headquarters with the alleged influence of his father, Honourable Juwon Gbadebo.
According to sources, Gbadebo did not stop there; he also put his wife’s brother, Ọlálékan Oriwegbe, a student of the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro heind bars after the latter showed up at the police station to clarify the contending land dispute between the couple.
The source said, “Olashile’s younger sister, Ọlálékan Oriwegbe left his school, Federal Polytechnic Ilaro after hearing his sister’s detention at the Ifo divisional police headquarters. He wanted to mediate in the so-called land issue.
“Unknown to him, Honourable Juwon Gbadebo, the father-in-law of the accused had instructed the IPO to arrest the boy. He was later made to sleep the cell on June 5. Olálékan was unable to sit for his exams on June 6. It took the intervention of students of Federal Polytechnic Ilaro before he was released after paying N10,000 to Ifo divisional police headquarters.”
The source said that when they got back to the police station on June 6, they met with the “IPO and she explained that we have to beg the father-in-law of the accused that he's an Honourable a former CDA of Ibogun (a town after Ifo).”
“We waited till dusk looking forward to seeing the father-in-law but he wasn't available and not picking calls.”
The source added that despite several interventions of well-wishers and those concerned from the couple’s relatives, the wife, Olashile was made to spend consecutive three nights in police custody, alleging that the police insisted on payment of N540,000 before she could be granted bail.
The source continued, “On June 7, it was shocking to receive news that Olashile would be spending the third day at Ifo divisional police headquarters and Ifo police divisional HQ had informed the mother-in-law to find the sum of N540,000 before bail would be granted. I contacted a lawyer and sent Ọlálékan to call him to explain the details to him. We would be going to Ifo tomorrow with the lawyer to grant her bail.”
When SaharaReporters contacted the Investigating Police Officer handling the matter on Thursday, she denied that the police demanded N540,000 as bail.
She noted that the king of the town had also intervened in the matter and they foresaw a possible reconciliation soon.
