A human rights organisation, the Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice (CHRSJ) has called for the immediate arrest of Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa by security agents for questioning over his comments during the Senate Valedictory Session which many interpreted as evidence of his interference in his wife’s performance of her duties.

Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa came under the spotlight following a video clip showing her husband making comments during the Senate Valedictory Session which many interpreted as evidence of his interference in the jurist’s performance of her duties.

“Particularly my wife whose freedom and independence were encroached upon when she was in office. She has been tolerant and accepted my encroachment and extended it to my colleagues.”

However, the Justice while reacting to the comments by her husband, Adamu Bulkachuwa, Senator who represented Bauchi North in the 9th Assembly, that he obtained favours from her on behalf of his fellow senators, stated that she never in her 40-year judicial career compromised her oath of office.

She however denied the allegation of judicial compromise in a statement dated June 17, 2023. Justice

However, CHRSJ in a statement signed by the Executive Chairman of the Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice (CHRSJ), Comrade Adeniyi Alimi Sulaiman on Monday disclosed that if the nation's judiciary could be manipulated by dick and harry to this extent, the hard earned integrity of judiciary as the last hope of common man would be in jeopardy.

The group affirmed that his revelation on the important arm of the government is weighty which should not be allowed to be swept under the carpet.

The group asked the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Hon. Justice Oluwakayode Ariwoola and National Judicial Council (NJC) to begin the close monitoring of the Justices of the Nigeria Courts, adding that Bulkachuwa's public revelation could not be taken with levity hand.

The statement reads in part; "This is absurd and wrong signal for our judiciary where the spouses, family members and friends would be interference in determining the outcome of the Court cases and this would make the populace to loss hope in the judiciary by resulting the society to anarchy State.

"In recent time, the common man in Nigeria, begins to wonder why judgments come out of Courts, are short of expectations and this is a pointer that the integrity of the nation's judiciary has been compromised by the judicial officers by giving judgments to the highest bidder.

"The way and manner; the judiciary being influenced by the so-called politicians; if the NJC does not stop it, they would stop the judiciary to function again and it would be a great disastrous for our democratic society and a stitch in time, saves nine.”
