2023 Polls: Nigerian Electoral Body, INEC Hires 427 Lawyers To Prosecute 215 Offenders

INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu who disclosed this on Tuesday during a meeting with the state Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to review the general elections, said that it had received 215 case files from the Nigerian police in respect of the electoral infractions.
 

 

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that 427 lawyers would be helping the commission to prosecute 215 people who committed infractions during the 2023 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu who disclosed this on Tuesday during a meeting with the state Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to review the general elections, said that it had received 215 case files from the Nigerian police in respect of the electoral infractions.

Yakubu said that the commission was working with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to prosecute the electoral offenders.
According to him, the NBA has provided 427 lawyers to help prosecute the cases free of charge.

Yakubu also added that the commission received the police report in the suspended Adamawa REC, Yunusa Ari, saying INEC would soon take appropriate actions on him.
SaharaReporters earlier reported that Yakubu’s meeting with the RECs was also centred on preparations for the off-season governorship Elections in Kogi and Imo in November this year.
The Independent National Electoral Commission had recently published the final list of candidates for Bayelsa, Imo and Kogi states’ governorship elections.
At its regular meeting held in June 6, 2023, the Commission approved the final list of candidates for the three off-cycle governorship elections scheduled to hold in Bayelsa, Imo and Kogi states on Saturday, November 11, 2023.
